Performance

Using Oracle Linux 8, performance has been increased by up to 35% compared to i-Vertix3 CentOS 7.

Security

The security of the i-Vertix4 Central Manager has been significantly enhanced. The key security features are briefly outlined below.

Secure Boot and UEFI

i-Vertix4 Central Manager now supports native Secure Boot and UEFI. In particular, Secure Boot is part of the UEFI specification designed to ensure the authenticity and integrity of critical software components within the firmware. Specifically, critical parts of the firmware, such as the OS loader, will only execute if authorised by a trusted entity. As a result, this helps to prevent the presence of rootkits that can embed themselves before the operating system (OS) boots.

Furthermore, cryptographic mechanisms (signatures) prevent untrusted software components from running. Keys within the UEFI firmware authenticate elements such as boot loaders. Thus, a bootloader will only run if it has a valid ‘signature’. However, if a signature cannot be verified or is invalid, the system will not boot. For example, if the bootloader’s signature doesn’t match what the UEFI firmware expects, the system won’t boot.

SELinux

i-Vertix4 Central Manager comes with SELinux enabled by default. Security-Enhanced Linux (SELinux) is a security architecture for Linux systems that gives administrative teams even more control over who can access the system. Originally it was developed by the US National Security Agency (NSA) through a series of patches applied to the Linux kernel using Linux Security Modules (LSMs). SELinux was released to the open source community in 2000 and subsequently integrated into the upstream Linux kernel in 2003.

Fail2ban

As with the i-Vertix3 Central Manager, the new version includes also Fail2ban to prevent brute force attacks. If there are 3 failed login attempts from the same IP address within 10 minutes, that IP address is automatically blocked for 30 minutes, denying access to the system. If required, allow lists can be created to exclude specific IP addresses.

Support for Hyper-V Gen2 VMs

Hyper-V tools

These enhancements ensure better integration of the i-Vertix4 Smart Poller in Hyper-V environments, significantly improving security and performance.

Secure Boot and UEFI are of course available in all virtualisation environments.

TLS 1.3 Support

We support the TLS 1.3 protocol, which is the latest version of the TLS protocol and brings several improvements in terms of security and performance.

From April, all new Central Managers will include the new version.
